The first Sherlock Holmes story, A Scandal in Bohemia appeared in the July issue of The Strand in 1891 and attracted considerable attention. Each Holmes adventure would be ‘complete every month’ but the element of suspense and the interest in the character and his exploits would work like a serial, prompting the readers to buy the following issue to find out what the eccentric sleuth was up to next. Arthur Conan Doyle saw this format as an ideal one for Sherlock Holmes, the hero of his two detective novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four. In their place would be a selection of short stories. The publisher, George Newnes, wanted his new magazine to be ‘organically complete every month’ and so serials were out. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes first appeared in the monthly periodical The Strand Magazine and it was this publication that secured star status for the author and his creation Sherlock Holmes. The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmesĭavid Stuart Davies looks at the classic early short stories first published in ‘The Strand Magazine’. ![]()

My sci-fi is always heavily based on rules and real science, so when I started thinking about the world of ghosts, I naturally gravitated towards thinking about how ghosts might work scientifically. The ghosts in your world have their own energies, rules, powers: what made you want to show a different side to ghosts than we’ve seen in pop culture before, and how did you decide on the shape and structure of the afterlife in The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker ? But it has a lot of the same elements of previous novels – humour, romance, plot twists, funny characters (or rather, characters who think they’re funny) and found families. But there is something very special and satisfying about Miss Rumphius. With the fairly recent advent of picture book biographies we do see interesting lives highlighted more frequently. I believe this book has endured, in part, because it shows us a fulfilling life from childhood into old age-something we all aspire to. It was first published in 1985 and it’s still in print from Penguin Random House. The book Miss Rumphius has also enjoyed a long life. The long life of Miss Alice Rumphius is shared by her fictional grand-niece and it included work, travel to exotic places, a beautiful home by the sea, and making a difference in the world…sigh, not too shabby. Often called “the lupine lady,” it was written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney who illustrated many books for children. In honor of Earth Day, I’m sharing Miss Rumphius, a picture book beloved by many-both adults and children. ![]() ![]() ![]() Heartbroken over false promises but fiercely resilient in their fight for freedom, Princess Sultana and her Saudi sisters prepare to face this new threat to women’s rights. ![]() Thanks to the prince, Saudi women can now drive and some policy-watchers even propose lifting the guardianship law!
